Caro Luaty

   Nós, os subscritores desta carta, estamos em vários sectores da vida do nosso País, somos diferentes uns dos outros em muitas coisas, mas todos temos em comum valores fundamentais: liberdade, respeito pelos outros, solidariedade social até ao altruísmo, coerência. Este texto não se afastará destes princípios universais, por isso esta é uma mensagem que podia ser subscrita por qualquer Homem de boa vontade, aonde quer que esteja.

1. Começamos por lembrar que o nosso País, Angola, precisa, mais do que nunca, de jovens, e tu és um jovem; de pessoas com apurada preparação técnica e profissional – e este é o teu caso; de gente com grande sensibilidade aos problemas sociais do nosso Povo: assim és tu; de alguém com grande idoneidade e elevados princípios morais – e para quem conhece as tuas opções na vida e o teu quotidiano Angolano e acompanha o que se tem passado nos últimos 25 dias, esta é mais uma descrição da tua pessoa. Portanto o teu perfil é o do cidadão exemplar de que Angola precisa para ser uma nação feliz e próspera. Não nos podes faltar: a nós e a Angola!

2. Vamos abstrair-nos das causas que motivaram a vossa prisão (para nos mantermos na tónica dos universais): após três meses de prisão preventiva, a investigação terá sido feita, um processo de acusação foi elaborado e não foram aduzidas razões para manter, excepcionalmente, a prisão preventiva. À luz do Direito Angolano vocês deviam ter sido libertos, aguardando julgamento. A manutenção das medidas coercivas só pode explicar-se por uma “vendeta” do Executivo, que quer punir (extrajudicialmente) os jovens que têm posto em causa a governação do Presidente da Republica;

3. Contra esta prepotência que deixa transparecer com clareza a submissão do poder judiciário ao político, vocês reagiram iniciando uma greve da fome, na qual só tu persistes, provavelmente por grande força ideológica e por um princípio nobre de coerência e respeito por ti próprio.

4. Porque sabemos que a tua fibra de lutador te tem tornado inflexível mesmo perante os entes mais queridos que te têm rogado para cessares algo que cada vez mais te pode ser fatal; porque sabemos que o poder, ou pelo menos um certo poder, é por definição insensível - nós, no domínio dos princípios e da coerência a que dás prioridade, argumentamos que ao prolongares esse comportamento até às últimas consequências, estás a enfraquecer o campo dos que pensam como tu, estás a deixar sem resposta as acusações que te fizeram, estás, em resumo, a desistir da tua luta, ainda que de uma forma heróica.

5. Mas como referiu o escritor Moçambicano Mia Couto, numa recente homenagem com a presença do seu Presidente da Republica: “… Infeliz é o País que precisa de heróis …” O ideal é não precisarmos de heróis e muito menos de mártires… Queremos, sim ter a todo o momento, cidadãos exemplares na luta diária pela Democracia e pelo Bem do Povo Angolano. E tu és exemplar entre os exemplares.

Querido Luaty, queremos com esta mensagem desobrigar-te do teu compromisso. Rogamos-te para que termines a tua greve, para recuperares a tua força física e juntar-te a NÓS."

Today the Angolan newspaper Novo Jornal published the following letter written by Dr. Luís Bernardino to Luaty Beirão. We created a facebook event with the goal of collecting as many signatures we can get from those who support this message. SIGN BELOW ON COMMENTS. We, the signatories of this letter, are from various walks of life in our country, and we are different from each other in many things, but we all have the same fundamental values in common: freedom, respect for others, social solidarity towards altruism, and a respect for coherence. This text will not depart from these universal principles, so this is a message that could be subscribed to by any man or woman of good will, wherever they may be.1. We start by remembering that our country, Angola, needs, more than ever, young people, and you are a young man; people with technique and professional preparation - and this is your case; of people with great sensitivity to the social problems of our people: something you possess; someone with great integrity and high moral principles - and for those who’ve followed your life options and your everyday life in Angola, and are aware of what has happened over the past 25 days, this is a description of your person. So, your profile is the model citizen that Angola needs to be a happy and prosperous nation. We, and Angola as a country, cannot be without you!

2. Let us abstract ourselves from the causes that led to your imprisonment (in keeping with the universal themes of this letter): after three months of preventive custody, the investigation will have been made, a prosecution process was developed and no reasons were put forward for maintaining you in preventive imprisonment. In light of the Angolan law, you all should have been released pending trial. Maintaining these coercive measures can only be explained as a "vendetta" by the Executive, who wants to (extra-judicially) punish young people who have questioned the governance of the President of the Republic;

3. Against this arrogant backdrop that clearly reveals the judiciary’s submission to the political power, you responded by starting a hunger strike, in which only you persist, presumably because your great ideological force and a noble principle of consistency and respect for yourself.

4. Because we know that your moral fiber as a fighter has made you become inflexible even towards your most loved ones who have begged you to cease an action that becomes more fatal by the day; because we know the power, or at least a certain power, is, by definition, insensitive – we, by considering the principles and coherence that you prioritize, argue that by prolonging this behavior until its final consequences, you are weakening the field of those that think as you do, you are leaving unanswered the accusations made to you, and you are, in short, giving up your fight, even if in a heroic way.

5. But as said by the Mozambican writer Mia Couto, in a recent tribute in presence of its President of the Republic: "... Unfortunate is the country that needs heroes..." Ideally, we do not need heroes and martyrs ... What we indeed want, at all times, is model citizens in the daily struggle for democracy and the wellness of the Angolan people. And you are a model citizen among the model citizens.
